Opening Remarks:  Congressmember Judy Chu, United States House of Representatives

The outcome of the 2016 elections will have deep and profound impact for years to come, not just for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, but for our nation as a whole. Presidential elections determine more than who occupies the White House. Presidents can create and also undo Executive Orders, significantly impact Congressional legislative priorities, and, as we have seen in recent weeks, leave a lasting legacy through the appointment of Supreme Court justices. Beyond the federal level, key issues such as LGBTQ equality and the minimum wage will be determined by state and local elections. As our nation grapples with growing economic divides and significant racial tensions, including rising anti-Muslim hate and anti-immigrant sentiment, the outcome of the 2016 elections will affect how successfully our nation addresses these fears and challenges.
